{"id":153598,"date":"2025-01-19T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-18T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=153598"},"modified":"2025-01-15T18:56:54","modified_gmt":"2025-01-15T07:56:54","slug":"kids-take-to-the-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/kids-take-to-the-water\/","title":{"rendered":"Kids+ take to the water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CHILDREN and young adults have pulled on their wetsuits and headed into the surf as part of the Kids+ Surf Ed program.<\/p>\n<p>Running from January 13 until January 16, at Torquay&#8217;s Fisherman&#8217;s Beach, the aim is to get children and young adults with disabilities into the water and improve their confidence and skills.<\/p>\n<p>Participants spent their time learning about water safety in a fun, supportive and inclusive environment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/MG_8313_31748.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Five year old Landon Osten enjoyed catching some waves throughout the program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Kids+ physiotherapist Louise Daniels said the days give children and their families a chance to enjoy the beach and the water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It gives kids who don&#8217;t have the opportunity to go the beach the chance because of all the extra supports.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s help getting in and out of the water, it&#8217;s help getting on the boards, catching the waves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s about the accessibility of the beach, half of the kids actually live in Torquay but can&#8217;t come down without this support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_153606\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-153606\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-153606\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/MG_8289_31743-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"1034\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-153606\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamish and Megan headed along for the 2025 Kids+ Surf Ed Program. BELOW: Five year old Landon Osten enjoyed catching some waves throughout the program.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Held at Torquay&#8217;s Fisherman&#8217;s beach the program is in its seventh year and is always a favourite with participants, often booking out weeks in advance.<\/p>\n<p>The Surf Ed program is supported by the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club and Torquay Marine Rescue, helping in the water and providing equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Across the four days, kids were able to climb aboard the jet skis, something a number of children thought they would never have the chance to do.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/MG_8304_31792.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">20 participants from Kids+ got int he water across the four-day program, working on building their confidence and skills.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>20 chilfren from kids + attended the program, with half of those wheelchair users and the others able to walk independently.<\/p>\n<p>Kids+ general manager Kelsey Jamieson said she hopes the program shows families what&#8217;s possible when going down to the beach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/01\/MG_8310_31750.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">As part of the program, participants were able to get out in the water on the jet skis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Part of it is trying to do it in a way that is safe for families, it&#8217;s still taking risks, they&#8217;re still on jet ski&#8217;s but we&#8217;re doing it in the safest way possible, but otherwise they wouldn&#8217;t have those opportunities.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kids+ thanked the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club and Torquay Marine Rescue for their help and support in running the program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHILDREN and young adults have pulled on their wetsuits and headed into the surf as part of the Kids+ Surf Ed program.
