PADDLERS will take to the waters of the Surf Coast next weekend as the Great Ocean Paddle returns to the region.<\/p>\n

Around 100 participants on all types of paddle craft are expected to take compete in the February 2 event, racing 20km downwind along the Surf Coast.<\/p>\n

Event director Jarad Kohlar said the race’s location makes it unique, as well as the fact it’s a downwind, open ocean event.<\/p>\n

“You go past Bells Beach, Winkipop, Point Danger, Point Addis, some iconic coastline features of Victoria, very remote very rugged, but also close.<\/p>\n

Depending on the way the wind is blowing, paddlers will start at Fishermans Beach in Torquay or Point Roadnight in Anglesea.<\/p>\n

Torquay Marine Rescue will provide water safety for the annual event while competitors will have access to live tracking throughout.<\/p>\n

Mr Kohlar said the event is aimed at people looking for a challenge, with the paddle attracting a wide range of entrants.<\/p>\n

“We provide the water safety and tracking and management to get people to have a target goal and go and achieve that.<\/p>\n

“It’s sort of like a fitness goal for people too and a motivation goal for people to get out and achieve.”<\/p>\n

One of Australia’s top competitors from Queensland will be coming down for the event, along with Casey Haynes who was in the Australian Marathon Team.<\/p>\n

Competitors are encouraged to carry a personal locator beacon and enough food and water for the duration of the race.<\/p>\n

The Great Ocean Splash will also run the day prior to the main event, taking place on February 1.<\/p>\n

The Splash is a family-friendly option with 2.5km or 5km distances available.<\/p>\n

This year’s award presentation will take place at 6pm at 14A The Esplanade Torquay, where participants can make use of the sauna and ice bath facilities.<\/p>\n
