	{"id":154348,"date":"2025-02-01T23:06:48","date_gmt":"2025-02-01T12:06:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=154348"},"modified":"2025-02-01T23:16:00","modified_gmt":"2025-02-01T12:16:00","slug":"wollaston-doubles-up-cadel-race","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/wollaston-doubles-up-cadel-race\/","title":{"rendered":"Wollaston doubles up at Cadel&#8217;s race"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A POOR start to the season has proved fuel to the fire for Ally Wollaston&#8217;s masterclass at the women&#8217;s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race today (Saturday, February 1).<\/p>\n<p>The New Zealand cycling star outsprinted a class front group to take out the 142.4km race that started and finished in Geelong.<\/p>\n<p>It came less than three weeks after the new FDJ Suez recruit and her teammates were among several teams left red-faced at stage one of Adelaide&#8217;s Tour Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>On a day tailor-made for fast finishers such as Wollaston, Dutch rider Daniek Hengeveld won with a solo break that caught the sprinters&#8217; teams napping.<\/p>\n<p>This time, there were no mistakes.<\/p>\n<p>Wollaston proved she is much more than just a sprinter, sticking with the leaders in the two ascents of the tough Challambra Hill climb that dominates the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.<\/p>\n<p>It is Wollaston&#8217;s first victory at UCI Women&#8217;s WorldTour level since winning stage one of last year&#8217;s Tour Down Under and follows her triumph on Wednesday at the Surf Coast Classic, making her the first rider to win both events in the same week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_154350\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-154350\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-154350\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/cadel-womens-podium.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/cadel-womens-podium.jpg 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/cadel-womens-podium-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-154350\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: The women&#8217;s podium &#8211; Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ), second; Ally Wollaston (FDJ &#8211; Suez), first; Noemi Ruegg (EF Education &#8211; Oatly), third.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It could have gone one of two ways &#8211; we could have taken it really badly and been fed up, pissed off about the result. But the team really took it in our stride,&#8221; Wollaston said of the Tour Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Communication in the team has been really good since then.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was definitely fuel for the fire.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We made a few mistakes in South Australia &#8230; it made us hungrier this week. We were all really motivated today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dutch rider Karlijn Swinkels (UAE Team ADQ) was second and Swiss Noemi Ruegg (EF Education Oatly) took third after winning the Tour Down Under.<\/p>\n<p>American star Chloe Dygert (Canyon Sram) was another pre-race favourite and finished fourth, surprisingly not unleashing her trademark turn of pace at the finish.<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Spratt (Lidl Trek) was the only Australian in the front group and finished 13th after doing a power of work in the last few kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>On the last climb up Challambra, with about 10km left, Wollaston knew she was a big chance when she stayed with Dygert.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t actually say super-comfortable &#8211; it was really hard. But to make it over Challambra the second time, on Dygert&#8217;s wheel, I knew I was in with a good shot,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Wollaston has never done a full season on the road, winning a silver and bronze on the track at the Paris Olympics and then two world titles at the velodrome.<\/p>\n<p>She joins Dutch star Demi Vollering, the No.1 recruit this season at FDJ Suez, and is rapt with her new team.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve grown so much, even in the space of two weeks,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The team have a lot of confidence in me.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today proves I&#8217;m not just a sprinter &#8211; I don&#8217;t particularly enjoy hectic bunch sprints.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So if I can figure out a way to be the strongest sprinter at the end of a really hard race, that&#8217;s the rider I hope to be.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A series of crashes punctuated the second half of the race, with Australian Alyssa Polites (ARA national team) and Hengeveld (Ceratizit) among those to abandon.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Neve Bradbury (Canyon Sram), one of the top riders in the field, was a late withdrawal this morning because of illness.<\/p>\n<p>Compatriot Luke Plapp (Jayco AlUla) is also out of the men&#8217;s 183.8km race tomorrow (Sunday, February 2).<\/p>\n<p>His team announced yesterday that Plapp&#8217;s domestic season has ended prematurely because of wrist surgery.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8211; WITH AAP<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A POOR start to the season has proved fuel to the fire for Ally Wollaston&#8217;s masterclass at the women&#8217;s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race today (Saturday, February 1).
