{"id":154553,"date":"2025-02-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=154553"},"modified":"2025-02-06T14:03:47","modified_gmt":"2025-02-06T03:03:47","slug":"fundraiser-shines-a-light-on-cancer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/fundraiser-shines-a-light-on-cancer\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundraiser shines a light on cancer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 400 people shone a light on cancer throughout the month of January, raising more than $22,000 for the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute (FECRI).<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 Lighthouse Classic saw participants walk or run 12km to raise funds for cancer research.<\/p>\n<p>Many took on the traditional walking route from Urquhart Bluff to Aireys Inlet Lighthouse, while others walked in Barwon Heads, and even abroad.<\/p>\n<p>FECRI in Ballarat is Australia&#8217;s only regionally based cancer research centre and aims to help patients with a broad range of cancers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/Screenshot_4-2-2025__69581.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walks took place all over the region, including in Barwon Heads.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The late Janet Jones founded the event.
