THE state’s best longboard surfers shined in solid waves at the West Coast Wax Up last weekend.<\/p>\n

More than 50 surfers took to the water on traditional longboards in both individual and teams disciplines at Point Impossible Beach.<\/p>\n

Individual winners were Ben Considine (men’s), Mel Staunton (women’s) and Matthew Shay (old mal).<\/p>\n

Thomas Fahey, Bea Conroy, Jack McKenzie and Matthew Shay (Pony Club) were victorious in the teams division.<\/p>\n

West Coast Wax Up event director Glenn Barry said the event was a huge success.<\/p>\n

“There were plenty of waves to be had,” he said.<\/p>\n

“The open men kicked it off. They just started tearing it up; they were going pretty hard to get those big scores.<\/p>\n

“The open women’s were absolutely sending it and taking off on some ones I thought, don’t take off on that!<\/p>\n

“It was just great to see. Hundreds of people hanging on the beach, smiles on everyone’s faces and people just watching the event all day.”<\/p>\n

The event also included a film night and an afterparty with live music in conjunction with Torquay SLSC.<\/p>\n

Barry said the event could not have happened without its sponsors and volunteers.<\/p>\n

“The event would have been such a shemozzle without them all. They organised so much,” he said.<\/p>\n

“I handballed so much off to people. People put their hands up without being asked to do all sorts of things.<\/p>\n

“Cat Crowe, Timmy Edwards, Mat Crowe; I leaned on them particularly with their knowledge. It was just amazing.”<\/p>\n

The West Coast Wax Up will return in 2026.<\/p>\n
