{"id":155297,"date":"2025-02-16T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-02-15T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=155297"},"modified":"2025-02-13T15:51:11","modified_gmt":"2025-02-13T04:51:11","slug":"smith-firing-ahead-of-cats-match-simulation-against-hawks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/smith-firing-ahead-of-cats-match-simulation-against-hawks\/","title":{"rendered":"Smith firing ahead of Cats&#8217; match simulation against Hawks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE word is Geelong star recruit Bailey Smith is tearing up the track, and Cats fans will have the chance to see him in the hoops in less than a week.<\/p>\n<p>The Cats&#8217; first match simulation of the 2025 AFL season will be against Hawthorn at GMHBA Stadium at 2pm on Monday, February 17.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong defender Oisin Mullin said Smith had been a great addition to the club since switching from the Western Bulldogs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bailey has been up there, in terms of pre-season performers,&#8221; Mullin said. &#8220;Clearly he is a big personality, he has settled in really well, off the field and on it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Season 2025 presents as a changing of the guard for the Cats, who will be without retired veterans Tom Hawkins and Zach Tuohy as well as seasoned campaigners Brandan Parfitt and Gary Rohan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/02\/CatsMitchKnevitt_78785.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mitch Knevitt has also impressed on the training track.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Draftees Jay Polkinghorne, Jacob Molier, Lennox Hofmann and Keighton Matofai-Forbes are among the new faces that may get a run in the pre-season fixtures.<\/p>\n<p>Midfielder Mitch Knevitt, a Grovedale product who was selected at pick 25 in the 2021 draft, is also one to watch, according to Mullin and fellow defender Jed Bews.<\/p>\n<p>The rules and duration of club-arranged match simulations are up to the discretion of the clubs.<\/p>\n<p>The Cats also have an AAMI Community Series pre-season match against Essendon, which is scheduled to be held at GMHBA Stadium on February 25 at 7.10pm.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are on sale now, with members and children entering for free.<\/p>\n<p>The Cats&#8217; first game of the AFL premiership season will be against Brisbane at the Gabba on March 6.<\/p>\n<p>BY BRIAN ALLEN<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE word is Geelong star recruit Bailey Smith is tearing up the track, and Cats fans will have the chance to see him in the hoops in less than a week.
