MAIN construction is now under way at the new Wurdi Baierr Aquatic and Recreation Centre in Torquay.<\/p>\n

New fencing has been installed at the site in readiness for pools to be excavated and for a double-storey building to rise.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth said it was exciting to be heading into a new chapter of construction.<\/p>\n

“This centre will be a wonderful asset for our community. We look forward to the health and wellbeing benefits it will bring for people of all ages and abilities for decades to come.”<\/p>\n

Stage one of works will cost $46.34 million and include a 25-metre indoor lap swimming pool, indoor exercise pool, gym and program space, allied health suites and a caf\u00e9 and supporting amenities.<\/p>\n

Preliminary site works have already been completed by contractors, including the delivery of a new car park and a path linking the car park with the existing Wurdi Baierr stadium.<\/p>\n

About 70 per cent of workers inducted to date are from within the G21 Geelong Region Alliance region.<\/p>\n

Corangamite federal member Libby Coker said the development will benefit the region for many years to come.<\/p>\n

“Torquay has long advocated for a world-class aquatic centre \u2013 for some community members this has been a journey of more than 60 years \u2013 and I’m so pleased that we are now delivering on their calls.”<\/p>\n

As a result of main construction starting, there will be several changes in the precinct.<\/p>\n

One netball court will be removed to make space for the new building and to share its entry point with the existing stadium.<\/p>\n

Wadawurrung Way is now closed near the Kuwarrk Lane intersection.<\/p>\n

The new car park at the southern end of the works site near the shire’s civic building is now open and accessible.<\/p>\n

It has the same number of parks as the former loop bay on Wadawurrung Way.<\/p>\n

Main construction is expected to be complete by late 2026.<\/p>\n
