NORTH Shore will have footy sides playing in the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) this year, following a decision by the club’s executive team.<\/p>\n
Last night (Tuesday, March 18), North Shore discussed whether it would field teams or place the football section of the club into recess.<\/p>\n
Today, the North Shore FNC executive team told AFL Barwon they would proceed with senior and reserve sides this season.<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon, AFL Victoria, and North Shore have been confidentially discussing player numbers and the Seagulls’ ability to field footy teams since at least December 2024.<\/p>\n
According to a statement from AFL Barwon, the three parties have been in regular discussions over the past 12 days, and North Shore has been working to meet the registration requirements outlined by the AFL Barwon Commission.<\/p>\n
As of today (Wednesday, March 19), the total number of eligible senior player registrations on the PlayHQ database exceeds 50 members.<\/p>\n
North Shore has assured AFL Barwon all registrants will be participating in the coming GFNL season, and additional registrations are expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n
Although below the initial request of 60 members, AFL Barwon agrees this has met the intent of criteria outlined last month.<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon chair Michelle Gerdtz said the commission commended North Shore\u2019s dedication to their players, members, and the wider football and netball community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile this is a positive step forward, we acknowledge that ongoing efforts will be required to ensure the long-term sustainability of North Shore FNC. AFL Barwon remains committed to supporting the club in this journey.\u201d<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon says much work still needs to be done to ensure a sustainable program into the future.<\/p>\n
Work has started between all parties involved to develop junior programs across Geelong’s northern suburbs.<\/p>\n
North Shore says it has plans in place to strengthen its football division not only this season but beyond.<\/p>\n
\u201cFollowing months of consultation, planning, and hard conversations, North Shore is proud to confirm its commitment to fielding two senior football teams in the 2025 season,” club president Maryian Szponar said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe club is also embracing transparency and collaboration, giving AFL Barwon an open invitation to be part of committee meetings and match-day events to ensure ongoing progress.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re prepared to open the doors, work hand-in-hand with AFL Barwon and welcome check-ins throughout the season from the outside for people see the struggles, but it\u2019s also what happens on the inside that matters and makes the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n
