{"id":157743,"date":"2025-03-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-03-25T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=157743"},"modified":"2025-03-20T11:10:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-20T00:10:20","slug":"sharks-prioritising-tight-knit-vibe-amid-numbers-boom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/sharks-prioritising-tight-knit-vibe-amid-numbers-boom\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharks prioritising tight-knit vibe amid numbers boom"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ARMSTRONG Creek&#8217;s female football program is expanding quickly in the fast-growing suburb.<\/p>\n<p>After having only five girls involved in mixed footy in 2023, the Sharks introduced under-10s and under-14s last year in the AFL Barwon juniors.<\/p>\n<p>Under-16s will be added this season as they have joined forces with Barwon Heads to be formally known as Barwon Heads-Armstrong Creek and they&#8217;ll wear a jumper that represents both clubs equally.<\/p>\n<p>Female football co-ordinator Sarah Monahan said the club wanted to maintain its community feel amid the exciting growth.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve worked really hard to create a strong foundation and I want it to be a foundation that is long lasting,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What I love about our club is that everyone knows everybody, we are a small community here, we are a fast-growing club but we&#8217;ve kept our numbers manageable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/03\/IMG_6103_14753.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Armstrong Creek under-16 players Keisha Mitchell, Willow Monahan, Scarlett Beal, and Frida Collins (all 14).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said it was important every player felt involved and got game time rather than having a big bench.<\/p>\n<p>The hope is to introduce under-18 girls and then in about five years&#8217; time, a women&#8217;s team.<\/p>\n<p>Monahan feels it will happen and highlighted how easy it was to get to Shark Park from nearby schools.<\/p>\n<p>The footy coordinator provided great insight into what it was like starting a female program.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Probably the biggest difference I find with girls football is that they&#8217;re not just there to play footy,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We found that out quite early.
