AIREYS Inlet’s top shops area is one step closer to a revamp, with the Surf Coast Shire appointing a landscape architect to begin detailed designs following strong community feedback.<\/p>\n
The Aireys Inlet Top Shops Design Improvements Project aims to enhance the layout and function of the precinct on the Great Ocean Road, while retaining its small-town coastal feel.<\/p>\n
More than 150 people completed surveys, 72 added comments on an interactive map, and the shire spoke with more than 190 people during three pop-up sessions.<\/p>\n
Cr Leon Walker said most of the feedback came from locals.<\/p>\n
“A special shoutout to Aireys locals. Eighty-four per cent of survey respondents were Aireys residents, which highlights their passion for their town.”<\/p>\n
“All input will help us work towards the goal of a great looking, functional and environmentally friendly space for everyone to enjoy \u2013 whether that’s while they’re popping into the shops, or as a spot to sit and chat.”<\/p>\n
Locals and visitors called for more greenery and shade, improved signage including a community noticeboard, better pedestrian safety, and potential relocation of the bus stop.<\/p>\n
The shire will also explore alternative parking layouts.<\/p>\n
Pete Wilson Landscape Architecture has been appointed to lead the next phase of work.<\/p>\n
A draft design will be released for further community feedback in May or June.<\/p>\n
“I encourage interested people to have a look through the full engagement report to understand the range of views and the potential adjustments we can make,” Cr Walker said.<\/p>\n
The project builds on two long-term planning documents adopted by the shire in 2015: the Aireys Inlet Top and Bottom Shops Urban Design Framework and the Aireys Inlet to Eastern View Structure Plan.<\/p>\n
“The latest round of community input aligns well with the previous feedback, which is pleasing,” Cr Walker said.<\/p>\n
