{"id":158674,"date":"2025-04-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-03T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=158674"},"modified":"2025-04-04T08:47:52","modified_gmt":"2025-04-03T21:47:52","slug":"wathaurong-celebrates-opening-of-booln-booln-cultural-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/wathaurong-celebrates-opening-of-booln-booln-cultural-centre\/","title":{"rendered":"Wathaurong celebrates opening of Booln Booln Cultural Centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative this week celebrated the highly anticipated launch of its Booln Booln Cultural Centre, after six months of refurbishment works at the Surf Coast Highway site.<\/p>\n<p>A large crowd gathered at the centre on Monday to mark the site&#8217;s return to Community hands with a smoking ceremony and dance performance.<\/p>\n<p>An eastern grey kangaroo and black wallaby kept watch over the proceedings, with the kangaroo eventually joining the outer edge of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Formerly run by the Uniting Church Australia under the name Narana Aboriginal Cultural Centre, the centre closed its doors to the public in June last year, after the Co-op successfully acquired the Grovedale site.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/487733403_1094384952_60177.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A large crowd gathered at the centre on Monday to mark the site\u2019s return to Community hands with a smoking ceremony and dance performance. Photo: FACEBOOK\/WATHAURONG ABORIGINAL CO-OPERATIVE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This has been a dream of our community for the last 30 odd years,&#8221; Wathaurong chief executive Simon Flagg said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This centre was created 28 years ago by the Uniting Church, but really the concept and ideas of this place was created by our community. Photo: ELLIE CLARINGBOLD<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Wadawurrung language Booln Booln refers to the lyrebird, the speaker of all languages, and was intentionally chosen as a symbol for the cultural centre where all are welcome and that aims to &#8220;speak to everybody&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For us, the centre is not only a space for us to communicate, communicate as a community who come from all different walks and different mobs, but it&#8217;s also a space for the non-Aboriginal community to come together,&#8221; Flagg said.<\/p>\n<p>The Booln Booln Cultural Centre will continue to reopen in stages, with announcements expected shortly on the reopening of the centre&#8217;s caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>The centre will also feature a stronger focus on local artists, with the gift shop carrying pieces created locally and an exhibition area to host artist showcases, while a variety of cultural awareness programs for people of all ages will begin in the coming months.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Wathaurong Aboriginal Co-operative this week celebrated the highly anticipated launch of its Booln Booln Cultural Centre, after six months of refurbishment works at the Surf Coast Highway site.
