THE Torquay Lions Club hosted this year’s Victorian state final for the Lions Youth of the Year Program.<\/p>\n

The event, held at Kithbrooke Country Club last month, had 80 Lions, judges, contestants and friends in attendance.<\/p>\n

For 61 years, students have been participating in Youth of the Year, which aims to provide an opportunity for young people to achieve success.<\/p>\n

Students who participate find the experience rewarding and develop their skills associated with interview technique, personal interaction, and public speaking.<\/p>\n

The contest is open to students entering their final years (Year 10 to Year 12) of schooling.<\/p>\n

The final featured students from five districts within Victoria, each of whom had won their district final.<\/p>\n

The overall winner was Sebastian Lunn from Melbourne, and he received a medal, a plaque and $1,000, and will go onto the national final at Traralgon on May 5.<\/p>\n

Amelia Hulonce from Portland won the award for public speaking.<\/p>\n

Other finalists competing were Grace Boehnke from Dromana, Olivia Woodhouse from Waverley and Oakley Tarrant from Rochester.<\/p>\n

Judges at the Victorian state final were Danny Vriens, Robyn O\u2019Loughlin, Pam Hacking, Emma Jones and Stewart Miller.<\/p>\n
