AT THE age of 36, Sean Atkinson was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s disease in 2023.<\/p>\n

He had no family history, no genetic link and no underlying health issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never suspected this diagnosis, like many, I didn\u2019t think someone my age could develop Parkinson\u2019s,\u201d the AFL Barwon commercial partnerships and communication manager said.<\/p>\n

It is World Parkinson’s Disease Day today (Friday, April 11) and Atkinson is encouraging the south-west community to gather to raise awareness about the disease at an upcoming event.<\/p>\n

Geelong will be hosting A Walk in the Park on May 4, at Eastern Park, at 10.30am and it\u2019s an opportunity for the whole community to come together in support.<\/p>\n

Mr Atkinson is an advocate for Shake it Up Australia Foundation, which is a not-for-profit organisation that funds Parkinson\u2019s disease research in Australia aimed at better treatments and ultimately a cure.<\/p>\n

He said Parkinson\u2019s was the fastest-growing neurological condition in the world.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Australia alone, more than 150,000 people are currently living with the disease, and on average, 50 people are diagnosed every day.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is often mistakenly thought of as an \u2018older person\u2019s illness\u2019, yet 10 to 20 percent of people living with Parkinson\u2019s are between the ages of 20 and 50.\u201d<\/p>\n

The disease is far more complex than the common perception of hand tremors.<\/p>\n

It can affect movement, cause gait issues, and reduce facial expressions.<\/p>\n

Many also experience cognitive impairment, depression and anxiety, sleep disturbances, loss of smell, speech difficulties, swallowing issues, fatigue, and a lack of motivation.<\/p>\n

Some will encounter a wide range of symptoms, while others may only experience a few.<\/p>\n

Mr Atkinson went to the Parkinson\u2019s Australia National Conference in Canberra this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe event featured world-leading medical professionals sharing updates on clinical trials, medical advancements, and evolving treatment options,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat was made clear is that while we are making progress, there is still a long way to go in the quest to slow, stop, or ultimately cure this disease.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike many others living with Parkinson\u2019s, I am determined not to let it define or limit my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we can\u2019t do this alone, we need the support of the wider community to raise awareness and continue advocating for better outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n
