{"id":159439,"date":"2025-04-17T04:00:54","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=159439"},"modified":"2025-04-16T14:54:58","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T04:54:58","slug":"jan-juc-architect-wins-big-at-top-gardening-show","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/jan-juc-architect-wins-big-at-top-gardening-show\/","title":{"rendered":"Jan Juc architect wins big at top gardening show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A JAN Juc landscape architect has been lauded for his unique design skills and awarded with top honours at a global gardening showcase.<\/p>\n<p>Matt York was presented with the Silver Gilt Award in the Show Garden category at the prestigious Melbourne International Flower &amp; Garden Show.<\/p>\n<p>His garden In Ratio with Africa explored the synergies of garden design between Africa and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>The project drew on York&#8217;s extensive experience working across Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, examining how different cultures use light, space, water and plants to create meaningful functional environments.<\/p>\n<p>A key feature of his cross-cultural garden was the inclusion of three rare Queensland bottle trees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/WEB_RATIO_PPOWELL_TH_82103.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Ratio with Africa explored the synergies of garden design between Africa and Australia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The trees, which are inspired by Ghana&#8217;s Baobab tree, convey the deep cultural connection both Australian First Nations and Ghanian communities have with their respective bottle tree species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our garden explores the shared cultural influences shaping garden design from the Surf Coast of Victoria to Ghana, Africa,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I [was] excited to showcase how resilient design principles from around the world can make a meaningful impact, by thoughtfully considering deep soils, cultural trees, water management and pollinating gardens.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His design included the sustainable reuse of water to both cool the urban space and enhance the sensory experience.<\/p>\n<p>It also featured a three-metre bird motel sculpture with nesting and purging, a bird bath and wood store for the wood-fired hot tub.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/04\/WEB_RATIO_PPOWELL_TH_82105.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The garden was awarded the Silver Gilt in the Show Garden category.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mr York said local contractors were key to the success of the project.<\/p>\n<p>Contributors included Stewart BuildCo, Cosh Living, Warners Nursery, Kuranga Native Nursery, Speciality Trees, Palm Life, Coolabah Turf, Shapescaper, Nero tapware, Fuegos JL, and Surefire hot tubs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a really high amenity garden that is compact but also takes on all of those broader environmental responsibilities,&#8221; Mr York said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What we are proud about is being able to tell a global story but still have that supported by local suppliers and local materials.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bringing those two worlds together was incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A JAN Juc landscape architect has been lauded for his unique design skills and awarded with top honours at a global gardening showcase.
