{"id":159824,"date":"2025-04-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/sweeney-shapes-the-bells\/"},"modified":"2025-05-12T16:10:53","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T06:10:53","slug":"sweeney-shapes-the-bells","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/swell-magazine\/sweeney-shapes-the-bells\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweeney shapes the bells"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE iconic trophies have been assembled, and history is ready to be made at this year&#8217;s Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Jan Juc local Jeff Sweeney has put the finishing touches on the silverware ahead of what is sure to be a showstopping event.<\/p>\n<p>Hand-crafting the bells has been in the Sweeney family for more than 40 years.<\/p>\n<p>Jeff&#8217;s father Joe started making the iconic trophy in the late 1970s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13200\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13200\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13200\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/2025\/04\/IMG_8563_79975_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13200\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sweeney has been making the trophies for ten years.<br \/>Photo: NATHAN RIVALLAND<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A carpenter by trade, a teacher and an Olympic wrestler, Sweeney worked with Rod Brooks and Stan Couper to craft some of the first bells.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney was also responsible for helping to bulldoze the first access road to Bells Beach ten years earlier.<\/p>\n<p>With his blessing, Jeff, his son has taken on the mantle over the past ten years, using his own boat-building skills to add his own personal touch to the fabled history piece.<\/p>\n<p>He feels incredibly privileged to be carrying on the fabled tradition for his old man and all those before him.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13199\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13199\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13199\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/2025\/04\/picture_20250401_131_96080_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"605\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13199\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe and Jeff Sweeney holding one of the first trophies Jeff made. I enjoy that dad did it and had so much passion for it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You talk to the crew on the world tour, and it&#8217;s one of the most sought-after trophies. That&#8217;s why I put a lot of passion into driving the quality.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Both dad , Rod Brooks and I have won a surfing title of some kind at Bells, so it [making the trophy] comes from an authentic place. We&#8217;ve all spent plenty of time out there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney has crafted this year&#8217;s trophies using blackwood from the Otways.<\/p>\n<p>He said the product is getting harder to source following the state government banning native logging.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13198\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13198\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/2025\/04\/picture_20250401_131_96126_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"749\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of the big perpetual Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach trophies which is left at the Australian National Surfing Museum. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;There are only two guys who can get it out of the Otways, but even they are being stopped now with their sustainable methods. It&#8217;s scarce, but it&#8217;s beautiful.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every year it varies. Some years you get beautiful fiddleback guitar quality blackwood and some years you get knotty bits. It&#8217;s a beautiful timber.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He said making the trophies was usually a six-week process.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I don&#8217;t do it all in one shot.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are multiple stages. It&#8217;s sourcing the timber, its machining it, it&#8217;s ordering the bells, sanding, it&#8217;s a couple hours here and there. It&#8217;s also all about having the right quality tools.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have a ships chandler who casts the bronze bells in Melbourne. They are amazing quality bells, and we have different size ones for first and second place.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Generally, the rule with the bell is you&#8217;ve got to win it to ring it, however Sweeney notes he has had to ring it from time to time to make sure everything is working in order.<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney laughingly said watching the surfers ring the bell is the most nerve-racking moment of the year in his family household.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13197\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13197\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13197\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/2025\/04\/picture_20250401_141_71611_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"618\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joe Sweeney with some of the early Bells Beach trophies. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;When they shake the hell out of it on stage, we are all gripping each other&#8217;s hands saying don&#8217;t break, don&#8217;t break!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They really shake it. They&#8217;ve just won Bells after all. They want to put it through its paces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a nervous, yet proud moment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sweeney said he plans on continuing the bell-making tradition for many years to come.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m not sure where it&#8217;ll go from me, the girls [my daughters] don&#8217;t do woodwork.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As it goes in the Jarosite band song Hey Joe Sweeney &#8211; not all men get to make a bell.
