{"id":159835,"date":"2025-04-17T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/former-ct-surf-star-launches-comeback-bid\/"},"modified":"2025-04-17T04:00:00","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T18:00:00","slug":"former-ct-surf-star-launches-comeback-bid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/swell-magazine\/former-ct-surf-star-launches-comeback-bid\/","title":{"rendered":"Former CT surf star launches comeback bid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FIVE-time World Surfing League (WSL) Championship Tour (CT) winner and Tokyo Olympian Julian Wilson is making a comeback to competitive surfing after an absence of almost four years.<\/p>\n<p>The 36-year-old has been awarded a wildcard for the coming Challenger Series, where he will launch a bid to make the top-tier tour again.<\/p>\n<p>Winner of the 2014 Hawaiian Triple Crown among his title haul, the Queenslander finished as world No.2 in 2018 but stepped away following the Olympics in 2021 for mental health reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Wilson was famously in the water in an event in Jeffreys Bay in South Africa in 2015 and tried to help as fellow Australian Mick Fanning was attacked by a shark.<\/p>\n<p>In a lengthy Instagram post in August 2024, the father of three said his competitive fire to be back in the CT was still burning.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This time three years ago I was sitting in a hotel quarantine room in the aftermath of my Tokyo Olympic campaign, watching my dream as a WT surfer fade away while heading home to be the best partner and Dad that could be during a very challenging time [mentally],&#8221; Wilson wrote.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/2025\/04\/julianwilsonfamil_27979.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"599\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julian Wilson with his family, pictured in Newcastle in March. Nothing in life compares to a healthy relationship at home and the opportunity to raise a family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The past six months I&#8217;ve had competing firmly at the forefront of my mind. It&#8217;s time for me to give it another crack.
