TORQUAY coach Dom Gleeson has lauded Brendan Carlyon’s influence on the Tigers, who have clawed their way to a 3-2 win-loss record in the BFL seniors after losing their first two games.<\/p>\n
“He was coming down to Torquay to retire but we’re not letting him, he’s been a great addition this year,” Gleeson said.<\/p>\n
A huge test awaits the Tigers against in-form Modewarre at home tomorrow (Saturday, May 10) at 2.10pm.<\/p>\n
The versatile and experienced Carlyon was named Torquay’s best in its 34-point victory over Portarlington in Round 5.<\/p>\n
“Through injuries and a bit of ball movement, we wanted to give Brendan a go and he really hasn’t let us down,” Gleeson said of the strong runner who played in the reserves last year.<\/p>\n
“His ball security [is good], he can lock down on opponents, he’s a leader, he’s had a successful career elsewhere [Bundoora].”<\/p>\n
Reserves captain Hugh Darke, who returned from an anterior cruciate ligament injury in 2024, was another experienced head brought into the senior side this year to ramp up the pressure around the footy.<\/p>\n
Gleeson confirmed the forward\/midfielder tore his ACL last weekend in a huge blow for the Tigers.<\/p>\n
“He’s been setting the tone for us this season,” Gleeson said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, teenager Will Montebello has booted 11 goals in the past fortnight with six against the Demons.<\/p>\n
The utility is solely focused on club footy this year after juggling Geelong Falcons and school commitments in 2024.<\/p>\n
Gleeson, a triple-premiership mentor, also thanked those who congratulated him on breaking the BFL coaching record, leading the club for the 179th time last weekend.<\/p>\n
The father of two, who spent eight seasons as playing coach, said he received plenty of messages, including from other players and coaches in the league.<\/p>\n
“I didn’t think I’d enjoy coaching as much without the playing side but I really am,” he said, acknowledging his supportive family and club staff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
