{"id":161156,"date":"2025-05-11T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-10T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=161156"},"modified":"2025-05-08T13:50:16","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T03:50:16","slug":"torquay-teen-wins-us-national-skiing-title","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/torquay-teen-wins-us-national-skiing-title\/","title":{"rendered":"Torquay teen wins US national skiing title"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A CHAMPION snow skier has emerged from Australia&#8217;s surf capital.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay teenager Alana Hunt is celebrating after winning the US national title for under-13 girls in freestyle skiing in Colorado in April.<\/p>\n<p>She won the overall title after finishing top 10 in all four events at Copper Mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Alana placed third in the half-pipe, fifth in ski cross, eighth in slopestyle and eighth in rail jam.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was like a dream come true to win the overall title,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It makes me realise how much I improved throughout my season in Colorado. I couldn&#8217;t have done it without my coaches and family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161256\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-161256\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1.jpg?_t=1746675784\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"903\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1-768x1153.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/Slopestyle_99033-1-1023x1536.jpg 1023w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay&#8217;s Alana Hunt upside down during the slopestyle.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The half-pipe involves doing tricks in a big, snow-covered 22-foot (6.7m) tall half-pipe and ski cross is a race on a banked course with heats of four skiers.<\/p>\n<p>Slopestyle involves tricks on big jumps and rail jam involves jumping on rails and pipes and sliding along them to perform tricks which are marked by judges.<\/p>\n<p>Alana confronted her fears in the half-pipe.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Earlier in the year, I broke my thumb training in the half-pipe so it was difficult for me to regain my confidence in time for the finals,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I actually ended up getting my best result in the half-pipe, which was amazing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 12-year-old started skiing when she was three, with her parents taking her to Mount Hotham; and it wasn&#8217;t long before they were skiing at Mount Buller every winter.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The instructors at Mount Buller helped me with my technique and I started to do well in competitions which just made me want to ski even more,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/RailJam_99034.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"595\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alana Hunt slides along a pipe in the rail jam.\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We eventually ended up moving up to Mount Buller for each snow season before coming back to Torquay for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This let me train on snow in the week but meant I had to balance it with home schooling over winter as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While she had been to Colorado before for race training, this was the first time she had entered competitions and spent a full season.<\/p>\n<p>Alana said she was enjoying being back at Torquay Coast Primary School, and praised the school for its support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A CHAMPION snow skier has emerged from Australia&#8217;s surf capital.
