{"id":161386,"date":"2025-05-15T04:00:48","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T18:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=161386"},"modified":"2025-05-14T17:13:36","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T07:13:36","slug":"gorcapa-demolish-lorne-co-op","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/gorcapa-demolish-lorne-co-op\/","title":{"rendered":"GORCAPA to demolish Lorne Fishing Co-op building"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority (GORCAPA) will demolish the Lorne Fishing Co-operative building at Point Grey, and has released technical assessments stating \u201cthe building has reached the end of its useful life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The release of the assessments is the latest step in the long-running plan to redevelop the Point Grey Precinct.<\/p>\n<p>Despite opposition from some in the Lorne community who would like to see the Co-Op structure preserved in some way, GORCAPA has repeatedly stated the 1949-era building has sustained significant damage due to its age and proximity to the shoreline.<\/p>\n<p>To support this, GORCAPA published a Structural Integrity Report, a Asbestos Survey and Risk Assessment and two Building Condition Reports on the Point Grey Redevelopment website on Friday last week.<\/p>\n<p>According to the authority, the reports find the Co-Op building is \u201cunsafe for future use\u201d, with issues including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Severe corrosion affecting key structural elements<\/li>\n<li>Structural compromises such as roof sagging, water damage, and beam deterioration<\/li>\n<li>Widespread asbestos and outdated pitch-based switchboards<\/li>\n<li>Non-compliance with existing Australian Standards, including concrete slab deficiencies, and<\/li>\n<li>Lack of disability access.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As previously announced, all existing tenants of the Co-Op building have until May 31 to vacate.
