{"id":161431,"date":"2025-05-15T04:00:08","date_gmt":"2025-05-14T18:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=161431"},"modified":"2025-05-14T17:37:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-14T07:37:57","slug":"hundreds-shift-gears-on-the-surf-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/hundreds-shift-gears-on-the-surf-coast\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds shift gears on the Surf Coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 250 racers put the pedal to the metal over the weekend in the annual Shifty Fifty biking extravaganza.<\/p>\n<p>The event in Anglesea saw riders navigate the endless flowy trails of the Surf Coast network across three racing disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The marquee Shifty Fifty 50km race was taken out by Daniel Braunsteins and Katriina Downer in times of 2:00:57 and 2:21:19 respectively.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/494132817_1078964240_12019.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"528\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shifty Fifty women&#8217;s 50km winner Katriina Dower.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mark Mathews and Bridgette Furphy were victorious in the Open Male and Open Women divisions of the Shifty Shorty 25km course.<\/p>\n<p>The 10km event was won by George Kent and Phillipa Briglia.<\/p>\n<p>Event organiser Brett Coleman from the Surf Coast Mountain Bike Club said it was a fantastic day out for all involved.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was such a beautiful day, perfect weather which you would have wanted to script. I think most people would have been stoked with it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vast majority of entrants did the 50km, 17 per cent probably did the 25km and about 12 starters did<\/p>\n<p>the 10km.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The trails held up very nicely. Everyone seemed to love them and love the course, which we mixed up a bit from previous years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Coleman said the event will likely have raised more than $10,000 for the club.<\/p>\n<p>All the raised at the event will go back into the upkeep of the Surf Coast Trail network and neighbouring biking routes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are no immediate things that need to be done, but mostly it&#8217;ll be making the trails a bit firmer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of it will also go into improving certain features and drainage.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One of the biggest things with trails is keeping water off them because that&#8217;s what causes erosion and makes them unsustainable.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The funds will be incredibly useful for these types of things going forward.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Race organisers have said the Shifty Fifty will return on May 9, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>For full event results, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/bighillevents.com.au\/events\/shifty-fifty-rd-3-surf-coast-50\">bighillevents.com.au\/events\/shifty-fifty-rd-3-surf-coast-50<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 250 racers put the pedal to the metal over the weekend in the annual Shifty Fifty biking extravaganza.
