THERE are just four days left to apply for a positive ageing grant from the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

Grants of up to $1,000 are available to host events and activities for people aged 55 and over that promote and support healthy ageing, strengthen social connections and encourage physical activity.<\/p>\n

Previous grant recipients have hosted dances, workshops, sporting activities and cultural experiences, with not-for-profit and charitable organisations, community groups and learning institutions invited to apply before 5pm on Monday, May 26.<\/p>\n

Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the grants program was often the difference between activities “getting off the ground or staying on the shelf”.<\/p>\n

“I encourage organisations and community groups to consider applying for a positive ageing grant from council to host an engaging and unique event.<\/p>\n

“With older people making up about 30 per cent of the Geelong region’s population, it’s becoming more and more important to help people aged 55+ connect, learn, stay informed and keep active.”<\/p>\n

Cr Rowan Story, who is also the chair of the city’s health portfolio, said the council was proud to continue supporting the region’s ageing population through the grant program.<\/p>\n

“Organisations and community groups can propose a diverse range of activities and events in their grant applications.<\/p>\n

“Examples of events that might spark interest and drive positive social and health outcomes include exercise classes, digital learning lessons, gardening workshops, swing dancing or a concert.”<\/p>\n
