{"id":161910,"date":"2025-05-23T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=161910"},"modified":"2025-05-23T03:51:29","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T17:51:29","slug":"surf-coast-celebrates-local-legends-making-a-difference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/surf-coast-celebrates-local-legends-making-a-difference\/","title":{"rendered":"Surf Coast celebrates local legends making a difference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WILDLIFE rescuers, the members of a sewing group and the devoted president of a surf lifesaving club are among the unsung Surf Coast heroes this year named Local Legends.<\/p>\n<p>A record number of nominations were received this year for the Surf Coast Shire&#8217;s annual local legends program, with awards presented to 15 individuals and four volunteer groups for their contributions across the local community.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s legends were official recognised yesterday (Thursday, May 22) at a presentation ceremony at the council&#8217;s chambers, held to coincide with National Volunteer Week (May 19-25).<\/p>\n<p>Eight individuals received a Community Commitment Award for their &#8220;sustained and substantial record of commitment&#8221; to people, a group, organisation, community or cause. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wildlife rescuer Jason Cichocki<\/li>\n<li>Community house leader Phoebe Mitchell<\/li>\n<li>Scout leader Marie McPadden<\/li>\n<li>Football club volunteer Melissa Pitt<\/li>\n<li>Surf lifesaving volunteer Heath Armstrong<\/li>\n<li>Wildlife rescuer Grant Norris<\/li>\n<li>Volunteer Tai Chi instructor Mary McNaughton, and<\/li>\n<li>Salvation Army and Share the Dignity volunteer Donna Symes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A further seven individuals received Community Impact awards, recognising the &#8220;remarkable difference&#8221; their contributions have made to people, a group, organisation, community or cause. They are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mental health advocate Colby Bryce<\/li>\n<li>CFA captain Kaylene Stocks<\/li>\n<li>Community postie Cameron McFarlane<\/li>\n<li>Bowls club volunteer Ben Coyle<\/li>\n<li>Growing Winchelsea volunteer Rhani Bayon<\/li>\n<li>Community radio presenter David Steele, and<\/li>\n<li>Physical and mental health advocate Tony Martin.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Lorne volunteering ladies&#8217; group, All Aboard DisABILITY Support Services volunteers, Sewing For A Purpose and Aireys Inlet Rural Australians for Refugees were also recognised with Volunteer Excellence awards.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Joel Grist commended all recipients, who he said were &#8220;doing extraordinary things in our community&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their quiet and often unseen heroics are symbolic of so much good work carried out by countless selfless people across our communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Volunteers are the heartbeat of our community life, and their contributions are immeasurable.
