{"id":162015,"date":"2025-05-26T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=162015"},"modified":"2025-05-22T15:43:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T05:43:57","slug":"students-design-new-playground-for-winchelsea-primary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/students-design-new-playground-for-winchelsea-primary-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Students design new playground for Winchelsea Primary School"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WINCHELSEA Primary School is getting a new playground and the hope is to have it ready for the first day of school next year.<\/p>\n<p>Acting principal Nick Keating said the students had a big say in the design after Grade 5 and Grade 6 students highlighted there was not a lot to do in the school grounds.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The kids had expressed interest in a ropes-themed playground and had done so for a while.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So we worked with our big kids last year to decide on the design and then put it out to the community and started fundraising.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The acting principal said the school&#8217;s facilities were &#8220;mostly wise and weathered&#8221; and he hopes it will be the first of many projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/IMG_7057_41583.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winchelsea Primary School year 6 and prep students celebrate receiving funding for the new playground.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The $57,763 playground will be built on vacant space near the school&#8217;s front entrance, between the flagpoles and cricket nets.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have 140 kids and, in the mornings, they all arrive five or ten minutes early and meet at the netball courts,&#8221; Mr Keating said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;An opportunity for them to go and use our new playground right here before school is really important for us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Keating said the existing big kids&#8217; playground would remain but would need to be taken down at some point as it had a limited lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>He said the school had worked hard to fundraise about $38,000 so far with funding from donations and events such as the colour fun run, a trivia night and Christmas raffles.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, Winchelsea &amp; District Community Bank contributed $12,500 while Winchelsea Lions Club has chipped in $5,000.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/05\/IMG_7060_47137.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Winchelsea Primary School students and acting principal Nick Keating with Winchelsea Lions Club and Winchelsea &amp; District Community Bank representatives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Community Bank&#8217;s Lisa Hicks, who is also on the school council, highlighted the benefits the playground would have for the town.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This won&#8217;t just be for the school kids during the school time, it&#8217;s for the whole community, which is something the bank is passionate about,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want to make sure everyone&#8217;s included.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WINCHELSEA Primary School is getting a new playground and the hope is to have it ready for the first day of school next year.
