THE Surf Coast Shire has started construction of a new footpath on the west side of the Surf Coast Highway that will connecting Baines Crescent to Bristol Road.<\/p>\n

The project will close a missing link in the shared path network, improving pedestrian and cyclist access between the Surf World precinct, Torquay town centre, and the foreshore.<\/p>\n

The works will be delivered in three stages. Stage one, stretching from north of Saint Therese Church to the caravan park, began on May 19.<\/p>\n

Construction of the remaining stages will follow, with the full project scheduled for completion by December.<\/p>\n

“We’re excited to be improving access and connectivity in this busy part of Torquay,” Cr Rebecca Bourke said.<\/p>\n

“This footpath will provide a safer, more direct route for locals and visitors alike.”<\/p>\n

Some existing driveways along the route will be affected during construction.<\/p>\n

The shire’s contractor will work closely with affected residents and businesses to minimise disruption.<\/p>\n

The Victorian government, through Regional Development Victoria, contributed $100,000 through its Council Support Package, which is focused on delivering lasting economic, social, environmental, sporting and wellbeing benefits for regional and rural Victorians.<\/p>\n

“We appreciate the support the Victorian government has shown with funding for this pathway.” Cr Bourke said.<\/p>\n

“With their support we can continue to provide these safe connections for the community.”<\/p>\n
