{"id":162682,"date":"2025-06-05T04:00:37","date_gmt":"2025-06-04T18:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=162682"},"modified":"2025-06-04T15:34:26","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T05:34:26","slug":"joeys-female-team-gaining-momentum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/joeys-female-team-gaining-momentum\/","title":{"rendered":"Joeys&#8217; female team gaining momentum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>COACH Chris Hickey says St Joseph&#8217;s female footy players have a spring in their step following two wins from their past three games in AFL Barwon Division 1.<\/p>\n<p>Joeys are sixth on the ladder with a 2-4 record after accounting for Barwon Heads in Round 5 and rival Torquay in Round 7 last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>They have a bye this week, and their next game is against third-ranked Geelong Amateur on June 14, at Queens Park Reserve at 6.30pm.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re happy with the first part of the season, we&#8217;ve played a couple of the stronger sides and certainly haven&#8217;t been blown away,&#8221; Hickey said of the Division 1 newcomer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I feel like we&#8217;ve been competitive, even in the games we&#8217;ve gone down to Grovy (Grovedale) and Thomson and St. Mary&#8217;s, who are at the upper end of the ladder. So they&#8217;ve been pleasing on that front.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/06\/0G2A2411_41124.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">St Joseph&#8217;s female footy side has a team talk.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Joeys beat Torquay by 13 points at home.<\/p>\n<p>Hickey said the players were becoming more familiar with each other, and he praised the team&#8217;s ball movement and ability to cover-off defensively.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a really high quality game of football.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anyone had been wandering past Drew Reserve on Saturday and stopped and watched a bit of the female footy, they&#8217;d have been pretty impressed with where the standard&#8217;s got to generally.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Joeys have had a cruel run with injury with Mia Haydon doing her anterior cruciate ligament and Cinnamon Sarkis battling a long-term knee injury.<\/p>\n<p>Alana Hocking injured her ankle and could be out for 8 to 10 weeks, according to the coach.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COACH Chris Hickey says St Joseph&#8217;s female footy players have a spring in their step following two wins from their past three games in AFL Barwon Division 1.
