COMMUNITY members from all backgrounds are invited to attend a free family friendly event to mark Refugee Week.<\/p>\n
The City of Greater Geelong is teaming up with the Northern Bay College and CatholicCare Victoria to host Shared Journeys at the fOrT Youth Hub in Norlane this Friday (June 20).<\/p>\n
There will be live performances, human foosball matches, an Afghan tea tent, a henna stall, an interactive art workshop, a photobooth and cultural tasting plates.<\/p>\n
The municipality has been recognised as a Refugee Welcome Zone since 2002.<\/p>\n
The region continues to provide a safe place to settle for many refugees on humanitarian grounds.<\/p>\n
“Ongoing conflicts overseas have displaced many people, with some of them finding new homes here in Greater Geelong,” Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said.<\/p>\n
“Let’s spend Refugee Week raising awareness about the issues affecting refugees and celebrating how the contributions of those from refugee backgrounds help make our community richer.”<\/p>\n
Multicultural affairs and citizenship portfolio chair Cr Andrew Katos said the council was proud to be celebrating Refugee Week.<\/p>\n
“We’re excited to put on a celebration called ‘Shared Journeys’ and reinforce how community acts as a lifeline to refugees, offering safety, belonging, and the strength to rebuild.<\/p>\n
