{"id":163665,"date":"2025-06-13T13:21:45","date_gmt":"2025-06-13T03:21:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/geelong-leads-nation-with-first-hydrogen-fuel-station\/"},"modified":"2025-06-13T14:48:02","modified_gmt":"2025-06-13T04:48:02","slug":"geelong-leads-nation-with-first-hydrogen-fuel-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/geelong-leads-nation-with-first-hydrogen-fuel-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong leads nation with first hydrogen fuel station"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VIVA Energy has today (Friday, June 13) unveiled Australia\u2019s first commercial-scale hydrogen refuelling service station, paving the way for the decarbonisation of hard-to-transition industries and an expansion of renewable hydrogen transport across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The $61.2 million project has been almost four years in the making and marks the country\u2019s first publicly accessible hydrogen refuelling station, designed to service a fleet of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEV) operated by the project\u2019s local partners.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_116160\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-116160\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-116160\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/06\/DSC06745-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-116160\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Initially, the service station will accommodate the refuelling of five buses and trucks every day, ramping up to 12 to 15 vehicles over the next two years.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These partners include Toll Group, Cleanaway, ComfortdelGro Corporate Australia (CDC) and Barwon Water, each of which operate heavy vehicle fleets, such as buses and rubbish trucks, in Geelong and have purchased hydrogen FCEV with support from the federal government\u2019s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA).<\/p>\n<p>Located on the corner of the Princes Highway and Station Street in Corio, adjacent to Viva Energy\u2019s refinery, the refuelling station features a 2.5-megawatt onsite electrolyser, which converts energy gathered from wind and solar farms, and recycled water from Barwon Water\u2019s nearby wastewater treatment plant, into renewable hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>The electrolyser will have the capacity to generate 1,000 kilograms of hydrogen daily, with the station capable of refuelling 10 trucks or buses consecutively in under two hours.
