{"id":163838,"date":"2025-06-20T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-06-19T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=163838"},"modified":"2025-06-20T12:49:18","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T02:49:18","slug":"shire-targets-single-use-waste-phase-out-by-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/shire-targets-single-use-waste-phase-out-by-2030\/","title":{"rendered":"Shire targets single-use waste phase-out by 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire has proposed to phase out single-use items and packaging across all its facilities and events over the next five years, and is seeking community feedback on the policy change.<\/p>\n<p>The new policy, currently in draft form, would see single-use items \u2013 such as takeaway coffee cups and lids, plastic water bottles, non-recyclable takeaway food containers, and decorations like balloons and streamers \u2013 phased out at all council facilities and events, as well as events that take place on council land.<\/p>\n<p>It expands on the council&#8217;s existing policies which saw single-use plastic and polystyrene items removed from all events, markets and sporting activities conducted on council land in 2021, and aligns with bans implemented by the Victorian government.<\/p>\n<p>If adopted, the policy would apply to all formal use of council facilities, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Groups who are tenants of council facilities, such as sports clubs<\/li>\n<li>Community members or businesses hiring council facilities for parties, events, conferences or workshops<\/li>\n<li>Facilities directly managed by the shire, and Organisers hosting events and markets on council land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The policy would not apply to informal use of these facilities, such as visiting a library or local park.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Leon Walker said it is a strategic priority for the shire to help drive a more circular economy by avoiding waste and maximising re-use wherever possible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Single-use items and packaging are major contributors to waste and pollution,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our Anglesea Landfill is nearing capacity, so it is increasingly important that we all work together to reduce waste going to landfill.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He confirmed the council would offer a range of supports to assist users of council facilities to make the transition.<\/p>\n<p>If the policy is adopted following community feedback, the shire will put together an implementation plan alongside a range of resources to support the change.<\/p>\n<p>As with the existing policy, exemptions would be available on several grounds, including health and safety, existing commercial agreements and a lack of suitable alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand this policy would mean some changes for users of our facilities,&#8221; Cr Walker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re very keen to hear feedback and suggestions from clubs, facility user groups, businesses, event and market organisers, and the general community now, while the policy is in draft form.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s important to us to be aware of any practical considerations, and everything we hear will be carefully considered before a final policy comes before the council for adoption in October.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To provide feedback before July 4, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/surfcoast.vic.gov.au\/SingleUsePolicy\">surfcoast.vic.gov.au\/SingleUsePolicy<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Surf Coast Shire has proposed to phase out single-use items and packaging across all its facilities and events over the next five years, and is seeking community feedback on the policy change.
