RACV has urged Victorians to exercise extra caution around school zones, as thousands of students return from school holidays across the state.<\/p>\n

On Monday this week, RACV head of policy James Williams said on Monday that motorists must be careful when driving and parking within school vicinities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen we obey speed limits and exercise patience and caution, we are role-modelling road safety behaviours,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

According to the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), about seven children aged 0 to 15 die annually on Victorian roads.<\/p>\n

Children are especially vulnerable around roads given their reduced visibility, limited judgement of speed and distance, and tendency to act impulsively.<\/p>\n

In response, RACV has highlighted various road rules to prioritise safety near schools in an attempt to lower this number of deaths.<\/p>\n

Motorists are reminded that most Victorian schools have reduced speed zones: 40kmh where limits are under 80kmh, and 60kmh where limits are higher.<\/p>\n

These typically apply from 8am to 9.30am and 2.30am to 4pm on weekdays during school terms.<\/p>\n

Lower speeds significantly increase pedestrian survival rates in accidents.<\/p>\n

Drivers must stop at children\u2019s crossings when orange flags are displayed, remaining stopped until the crossing is completely clear, regardless of whether a supervisor is present.<\/p>\n

Parents are urged to follow school-specific parking rules. \u201cKiss and Go\u201d zones allow two-minute drop-offs, while parking near crossings or in bus and \u201cNo Stopping\u201d zones is illegal.<\/p>\n

With fewer children walking or cycling to school, the RACV recommends parents supervise younger kids, teach road awareness, and ensure cyclists wear helmets. E-scooters are not permitted for those under 16 outside private property.<\/p>\n

\u201cSchool zones exist for the safety of our youngest and most vulnerable road users,\u201d Mr Williams said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone shares responsibility for creating a safe environment around schools, whether you\u2019re a parent, teacher, or simply a passing motorist.<\/p>\n

\u201cCongestion at school drop off is a point of frustration for many parents and carers.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is worth considering parking a block away and walking the last part of the journey to the school.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said this was a great way to avoid congestion while increasing active travel.<\/p>\n
