THERE will be games, crafts and cake on the cards tomorrow (Friday, August 1) at Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library, as the cultural hub marks its first spin around the sun with a community celebration.<\/p>\n

Running all day, the birthday bash’s program features activities for people of all ages, including toddler time, yoga, drop-in crafts, live music, a scavenger hunt and a midday cake cutting.<\/p>\n

Geelong Regional Library Corporation chair and Surf Coast Shire councillor Liz Pattison said the library has, in just one year, become a welcoming and inspiring space for locals to connect, access knowledge and participate in community life.<\/p>\n

Since it opened its doors, Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library has welcomed more than 120,000 visitors, signed up more than 4,000 new members, and continues to provide a variety of well-attended events, workshops and programs to the community.<\/p>\n

“Public libraries today are essential places of belonging,” Pattison said.<\/p>\n

“Conversation Club has become a crucial opportunity for connection for many, while local creatives love the podcast studio and Makerspace.<\/p>\n

“There is everything from digital literacy, makerspace workshops, movie nights, cultural events and author talks. Early literacy programs give little ones strong foundations for lifelong learning and attract huge crowds \u2013 Toddler Time sessions regularly attract more than 120 participants.”<\/p>\n

The $22 million building, designed by Buchan Architects and built by Nicholson Construction, spans three storeys and features a design inspired by a “living water” narrative that was developed in consultation with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.<\/p>\n

City of Greater Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the library has been a fantastic addition to the fast-growing Armstrong Creek community.<\/p>\n

“Libraries are vital hubs that bring people together to learn, create and grow, and the City of Greater Geelong was proud to contribute more than $20 million towards the construction of this state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly library and community space.<\/p>\n

“A huge thanks to everyone who’s made Biyal-a’s first year such a success \u2013 from the Geelong Regional Libraries’ engaging programs to the thoughtful design by Buchan Architects, which received a commendation at the 2025 Australian Interior Design Awards.<\/p>\n

“It’s fantastic to see this vibrant space receiving national recognition and it’s another example of why Geelong is Australia’s only UNESCO City of Design.<\/p>\n

Biyal-a Armstrong Creek Library was jointly funded by the City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian government, with the former contributing $1.5 million to the project.<\/p>\n
