ANGLESEA flipped the switch on its first public electric vehicle charging station earlier this month, giving locals and visitors a new place to plug in.<\/p>\n

The charger, installed at the Anglesea Community Hub, outside the senior citizens building on McMillan Street, is one of four new public stations being rolled out across the Surf Coast Shire<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The charger installed at the Lorne Visitor Information Centre has been operational since December<\/a>, while works to install a charging station in Winchelsea at the Old Library Building in Willis Street are under way.<\/p>\n

Although initially expected to open in June, works are still to begin in Aireys Inlet to install a charging station at the town’s community hall.<\/p>\n

Both the Winchelsea and Aireys Inlet charging stations are now expected to open to the public closer to the end of the year.<\/p>\n

“With more visitors driving electric or hybrid vehicles, it’s important to have reliable charging stations to keep people on the road,” Cr Leon Walker said.<\/p>\n

“The Lorne charger came online just in time for the busy summer season, and it’s fantastic to see another one ready in Anglesea.”<\/p>\n

The stations have been funded through the Victorian government’s destination charging across Victoria program, as part of its push to increase the uptake of zero-emissions vehicles, with a target for 50 per cent of all new light vehicle purchases to be electric by 2030.<\/p>\n

Each sites was chosen based on several criteria, including being on a shire-owned and operated switchboard and meter, the ability to upgrade the power supply, accessibility for travellers, and minimal impact on heritage buildings and existing parking.<\/p>\n

“Once all four chargers are operational, visitors will have more options for topping up their vehicles while exploring our region,” Cr Walker said.<\/p>\n
