PARENTS For Climate are campaigning for net zero by 2035, taking their calls to the beaches of Torquay this Sunday, August 17.<\/p>\n
The local group is encouraging people to head down to Torquay Front Beach at 3pm with their own signs, calling on the Federal Government to commit to reducing emissions to net zero.<\/p>\n
Calls for the commitment are in response to the coming decision from the Albanese Government on Australia’s 2035 climate target.<\/p>\n
Local communities are calling for the adoption of a bold science-based 2035 climate target, aimed at giving the next generation the chance to thrive.<\/p>\n
Geelong-Bellarine-Surf Coast Parents for Climate’s Laura Billings said group members were making a stand for their children’s future.<\/p>\n
“As a parent, I think about the world my kids will inherit,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Unless we drastically cut emissions this decade, they’ll face more fires, floods, heatwaves and hardship.<\/p>\n
“Our leaders have an obligation and duty of care to protect children \u2013 not delay action.”<\/p>\n
The coming Surf Coast event follows one held in Ocean Grove last weekend as part of Parents for Climate’s national month of mobilisation.<\/p>\n
“The science is clear. The law is clear. And so is the voice of our communities,” Ms Billings said.<\/p>\n
“This is a once-in-a-generation chance to do the right thing. Our kids are counting on us.”<\/p>\n
Through their community action, Parents for Climate are hoping to draw the attention of decision makers, including Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.<\/p>\n
The family-friendly action will kick off with a group photo of homemade or pre-printed signs at Torquay Front Beach near Price Street and the Esplanade to send the message.<\/p>\n
