The SES is urging people across the Greater Geelong and Surf Coast regions to prepare to take shelter, with severe weather expected to batter the region this evening (Friday, August 29).<\/p>\n
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning at 12.20pm, advising damaging south-westerly winds averaging 55 to 65km\/h with gusts around 100 km\/h are expected to develop between 10pm and 4am.<\/p>\n
Locals and visitors to the region are urged to prepare to take shelter and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather, including damage to buildings, dangerous road conditions, fallen trees and powerlines, and damage to vehicles.<\/p>\n
People are encouraged to park their cars undercover, away from trees, stay inside if conditions appear dangerous and avoid travel. Power outages are expected, and the community is advised to charge their devices now in anticipation.<\/p>\n
It is also recommended that any loose items, such as outdoor furniture, umbrellas and trampolines are secured before the severe weather arrives and, if safe to do so, that you contact family members and neighbours to ensure they are also aware of the situation.<\/p>\n
Those driving in dangerous conditions are urged to pull over away from trees and remain aware of road hazards, such as mud, debris and any damage to roads or bridges.<\/p>\n
