{"id":168994,"date":"2025-09-04T04:00:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-03T18:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=168994"},"modified":"2025-09-03T16:05:27","modified_gmt":"2025-09-03T06:05:27","slug":"local-firefighters-to-make-history-at-stair-climb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/local-firefighters-to-make-history-at-stair-climb\/","title":{"rendered":"Local firefighters to make history at stair climb"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FRESHWATER Creek CFA will be represented for the first time ever at Saturday&#8217;s (September 6) Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb.<\/p>\n<p>Two members of the small but mighty team \u2014 Simon Parkinson and Steph McCallum \u2014 will ascend a gruelling 28 floors of the Crown Metropol to raise vital funds for cancer research and crisis support.<\/p>\n<p>Climbers will carry up to 25kg of turnout gear and breathing apparatus, a symbol of the significant health and wellbeing burden faced by first responders and their families on a daily basis.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Parkinson said he&#8217;s been in training for two months in anticipation for the event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Everything is coming together really well\u2026 I&#8217;ve been in the gym on the stair climb and I also work in high-rise construction, so I&#8217;ve got access to the 40 floors of stairs there.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My brother has been involved for a few years, and he&#8217;s been encouraging me to do it for a long time. I&#8217;m stoked we are going to be able to make it a family occasion this year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The pair of us are really proud that we are the first ones from Freshwater Creek CFA to be completing the challenge.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/IMG_2224_37280.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Freshwater Creek CFA will be represented for the first time ever at the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Preparations have looked different for Ms McCallum, however, after last minute surgery left her unable to do much training.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve just recovered and am just starting to get into my training now.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m climbing stairs, doing squats and just doing everything I can to get strength back in my knees.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is her own experience with PTSD that has inspired her to take on the challenge for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;PTSD really hits home for me\u2026 I&#8217;ve got it, so I really wanted to raise money to support what are some really good causes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The pair has already raised more than $2,000, with all proceeds to be split between the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation, Lifeline and 000 Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are both at over $1,000 and it&#8217;s fantastic everyone has just chipped in to help,&#8221; Mr Parkinson said.<\/p>\n<p>Ms McCallum said she was proud to have already surpassed her fundraising goal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hopefully we get a few more last-minute donations,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>To donate to the Freshwater Creek CFA, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/firefighterclimb.org.au\/station\/cfa\/freshwater-creek\">firefighterclimb.org.au\/station\/cfa\/freshwater-creek<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FRESHWATER Creek CFA will be represented for the first time ever at Saturday&#8217;s (September 6) Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb.
