WHEN Geelong Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) was faced with the surrender of 67 dogs earlier this year, the team at Torquay Coles rallied behind the organisation.<\/p>\n

In the aftermath of the unexpected surrender, the Torquay community came together to donate essential supplies for the rescued animals including food, blankets, bedding and toys. Since the initial donation, Torquay Coles has committed to making the donations a regular initiative.<\/p>\n

GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said this kind of support has a direct and meaningful impact and helps offset the daily costs involved in rescuing animals.<\/p>\n

“It costs an average of $65 a day to care for just one animal at GAWS, and with up to 300 animals in our care at any given time, these costs quickly add up.<\/p>\n

“Donations from partners like Torquay Coles allows us to redirect resources toward veterinary care, rehabilitation and rehoming efforts.”<\/p>\n

The animal shelter receives no government funding and relies heavily on the generous support of the community to deliver its vital work.<\/p>\n

Coles’ donation came at a time of crisis for the charity, with the initial supplies helping to provide immediate comfort and essential care to the rescued animals.<\/p>\n

“Having the support of a local supermarket like Torquay Coles is incredibly powerful,” Ms Cocks said.<\/p>\n

“It not only helps us meet the practical needs of the animals in our care, but it also builds community awareness and encourages others to get involved.<\/p>\n

“It shows how local businesses can play a real role in animal welfare, and the ripple effect of their generosity in enormous.”<\/p>\n

People can get involved by shopping at Torquay Coles and purchasing items to put in the trolley located just outside the checkouts.<\/p>\n

Alternatively, in-kind donations can also be made directly to GAWS or financial contributions through gaws.org.au\/donate<\/a><\/p>\n

“Every act of support, big or small, helps ensure animals receive the love and care they deserve,” Ms Cocks said.<\/p>\n

“We thank all those who enable our work and help us give all animals a second chance, because every life is precious.”<\/p>\n
