The community is invited to learn more about a new bridge to be built on the Great Ocean Road at Wye River by attending a drop-in community session tomorrow (Saturday, September 15).
\nAn information session will be held at the Wye River Surf Life Saving Club from 10am-noon and everyone is encouraged to come along, ask questions and view the designs.
\nThe existing bridge was built in the 1960s and is no longer up to standard for modern traffic demands, especially for a popular tourist route like the Great Ocean Road.
\nIt will be replaced with a stronger, wider and safer structure capable of carrying an increased load capacity of 100 tonnes.
\nThe new bridge will be built on the same alignment and will include a wider bridge deck, and a wider footway on the ocean side of the structure to boost safety and convenience for all road users.
\nThe existing pedestrian bridge will also receive a fresh coat of paint.
\nConstruction on the new bridge is expected to get underway in March 2019. The bridge will be built in halves, allowing a single lane of traffic to remain open during construction, with traffic management in place.
\nRegional Roads Victoria, Regional Director (South West) Mark Koliba said the Wye River community had been incredibly supportive of all the work undertaken on the Great Ocean Road in recent years.
\n\u201cThe community has endured a lot following the devastating fires, the landslides and all the subsequent road rebuilding and geotechnical works,\u201d he said.
\n\u201cI want to thank the community for their patience and support \u2013 we\u2019re scheduling construction of this new bridge to avoid the summer peak and will do all we can to minimise the disruption.\u201d
\nThis $4.8 million project is funded via the federal government\u2019s Bridges Renewal Program and the state government\u2019s Strong Bridge, Stronger Economy program.
