{"id":171097,"date":"2025-09-25T14:45:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-25T04:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=171097"},"modified":"2025-09-25T14:46:03","modified_gmt":"2025-09-25T04:46:03","slug":"queen-of-the-waves-returns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/queen-of-the-waves-returns\/","title":{"rendered":"Queen of the waves returns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WORLD Surf League (WSL) women&#8217;s champion Molly Picklum has been given a \u201csecond homecoming\u201d at Rip Curl in Torquay to celebrate her famous recent victory.<\/p>\n<p>The Rip Curl team-rider was welcomed back by more than 50 staff members earlier today (Thursday, September 25).<\/p>\n<p>Picklum took out her first world surfing title three weeks ago at the WSL Finals in Fiji, defeating American Caroline Marks in a best of three matchup.<\/p>\n<p>The 22-year-old was given a guard of honour on her entry to Rip Curl Torquay before participating in a special Q&amp;A with staff.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Molly-Interview-4_18198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picklum completed a special Q and A with staff members at Rip Curl.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She then had the great pleasure of putting her plaque up next to the other Rip Curl world champions including Stephanie Gilmore, Mick Fanning, Tyler Wright and Gabriel Medina.<\/p>\n<p>Picklum spoke exclusively to the <em>Surf Coast Times<\/em> this morning about her greatest professional surfing achievement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like the second homecoming for me being back here in Torquay,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been supported by these guys from the first day of my professional surfing career and now we are at the pinnacle together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing a world champion has been that dangling carrot that has gotten me out of bed every morning, and all of a sudden you do it and you\u2019re jumping out of bed every day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 402px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/09\/Molly-Guard-3_18111.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"402\" height=\"603\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picklum was given a hero&#8217;s welcome to Rip Curl HQ in Torquay.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She said she was incredibly proud of the way she went about winning the world title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had a lot of noise going around in my head to make sure I approached it right \u2013 I guess this was just me being nervous.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had my structures and framework that I stuck by, and then from there it was just a blast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Picklum said she now had all eyes on targeting another world title in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt just feels like we are getting started, so let\u2019s ramp it up and go for it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the best feeling, the monkey is off the back and now I just want to do it any way that I can.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WORLD Surf League (WSL) women&#8217;s champion Molly Picklum has been given a \u201csecond homecoming\u201d at Rip Curl in Torquay to celebrate her famous recent victory.
