{"id":172508,"date":"2025-10-16T04:00:14","date_gmt":"2025-10-15T17:00:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=172508"},"modified":"2025-10-15T15:39:21","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T04:39:21","slug":"islas-decades-of-craft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/islas-decades-of-craft\/","title":{"rendered":"Isla&#8217;s decades of craft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A living treasure of the Royal Geelong Show is gearing up for her 91st crack at entering the much-loved Homecrafts Competition.<\/p>\n<p>Isla Adamson, 99, has been entering needlework, knitting, jams and preserves, dolls and plenty more into the event extravaganza since she was just a little girl.<\/p>\n<p>This year marks a significant milestone for the former Homecrafts competition coordinator who not only makes history with her number of entries but will soon celebrate her 100th birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The Bannockburn resident&#8217;s love for needlework all started when she was a young girl at state school, this set up a pathway for her to continue her passion for years to come.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 603px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_3301_33752.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"603\" height=\"402\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Isla&#8217;s favourite patterned piece of work.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a part of me all my life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We had a teacher who used to come in on a Friday and teach the girls fancy work and whatever they called it in those days.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I started knitting because my grandmother taught me. I&#8217;d sit in front of a stool, and she&#8217;d show me how to do it\u2026 I started that when I was about four and a half.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When I left school, I joined the embroiders guild in Geelong and I learnt all this fancy stitching with drawn threads and weaving.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Adamson said making patterns in her needlework brings her the most joy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like when you start on it, and you get a centre and you build up your patterns of what you&#8217;re going to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She has been in the Country Women&#8217;s Association for over 60 years, serving as president and secretary at groups including Mount Moriac and Geelong.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_122196\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-122196\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-122196 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_3310_33769-600x380.jpg?_t=1760497717\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-122196\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Larcombe\/Adamson family has been part of the Royal Geelong Show since 1898.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Adamson only recently stepped away from the group, after what was closing in on 70 years of service.<\/p>\n<p>Her success at the Royal Geelong Show has been mind-blowing, with a full scrap book dedicated to her prize certificates.<\/p>\n<p>This paved the way for her to start running the Homecrafts Competition at the show for many years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For me, there&#8217;s a lot of thirds and seconds in there, along with some firsts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always just loved being a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Because of my work with the embroiders guild and the number of techniques I learnt, it gave me plenty of confidence to be able to run the homecrafts at the Geelong Show.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Now I couldn&#8217;t do it because I&#8217;m not familiar with computers, I used to just do it all in writing. So there you are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/10\/IMG_3309_33821.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mrs Adamson has won many awards for sewing clothes for dolls.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mrs Adamson said key to her longevity has been her love for homecrafts, a constant in her life over the years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The years just keep going by!<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I suppose continuing to keep up with my interest has been some part of still being here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My love for farming has also been key, as we used to have chicken farms and so on. There was always something to do on the farm.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 99-year-old plans on again going to the Royal Geelong Show on a few of the days to check out the judging and see what&#8217;s going on.<\/p>\n<p>A taxi or two will help to deliver the local treasure to the place that has brought her so much joy in her close to 100 years on the planet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A living treasure of the Royal Geelong Show is gearing up for her 91st crack at entering the much-loved Homecrafts Competition.
