{"id":173004,"date":"2025-10-23T04:00:50","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T17:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=173004"},"modified":"2025-10-22T15:09:06","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T04:09:06","slug":"shanahan-hickson-surf-to-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/sport\/shanahan-hickson-surf-to-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Shanahan, Hickson surf to success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAN JUC&#8217;s Carly Shanahan and the Mornington Peninsula&#8217;s Lucas Hickson have been crowned the Victorian State Open Champions for this year.<\/p>\n<p>The pair took home top honours against more than 50 competitors at Bells Beach at the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The first year of a new format for the event saw surfers take to the water at least twice in a bid to gain a spot in the Rip Curl Pro Trials and claim a significant cash prize.<\/p>\n<p>2025 Rip Curl Pro Trials winner Carly Shanahan was unstoppable in the women&#8217;s field, winning her opening round heat before locking in the equal highest heat total of the whole weekend to make the final.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/Champions-251019-114_54650.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carly Shanahan and Lucas Hickson hoist the trophy into the air.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With it all on the line, Shanahan didn&#8217;t look like losing, scoring a heat topping score on her first wave of a 7.33 before posting a 6.17 to seal the win.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am frothing to take the win! Time to start putting in the work for the trial,&#8221; she said<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There was some amazing surfing going down. We&#8217;re so lucky to be able to live in this beautiful place with these waves and to surf them uncrowded is even better.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The format to have a minimum two surfs at Bells is all time. All the girls surf incredibly, and I was inspired to put in my all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Coming in second was Ava Holland (Dromana), third went to Sara Hickson (Rye) and fourth was Lillian Bassed (Sandy Point).<\/p>\n<p>Over in the men&#8217;s field, Lucas Hickson claimed his second successive state championship in fine fashion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/10\/LucasHickson-251019-_54619.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lucas Hickson went back-to-back in the open men&#8217;s division.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hickson finished the final with a strong 15.23 heat total out of a possible 20 points, ahead of Kai Nudd (Jan Juc) who followed in second place.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Bells is such an iconic wave and getting the chance to surf it with just a few others out is pretty special,&#8221; Hickson said.<\/p>\n<p>The new format this year was a cool change too.
