MORE than 700 athletes tested their endurance and skill in the second annual Torquay Triathlon at the weekend.<\/p>\n

Under sunny skies, competitors completed a 400m swim from Fishermans Beach, a 15km bike ride along the picturesque coastline of Torquay and 4km along the stunning foreshore.<\/p>\n

Charlee Newman was the first female over the line.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

Close to 80 children took part in the inaugural kids’ event, with the task at hand a 100m swim, 3km ride and 1km run in a non-timed event.<\/p>\n

The main race was taken out in a rapid time of 45 minutes and 21 seconds by Merlin Tzaros, while the women’s title belonged to Charlee Newman with a time of 53 minutes and 41 seconds.<\/p>\n

Team Young Bro’s Racing won the teams relay with a time of 51 minutes and 22 seconds.<\/p>\n

Event organiser Andrew Letts said participation numbers had skyrocketed from the inaugural Torquay Triathlon, giving the team great confidence moving forward.<\/p>\n

“We were really grateful that the community supported the event. We believe about 40 per cent of ticket sales were locals which was terrific.<\/p>\n

Riders completed a 15km journey along the Surf Coast foreshore.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

 <\/p>\n

“To go from 460 or so people last year to more than 700 was amazing. All of this could not have been possible without the support of Surf Coast Events and our sponsors.”<\/p>\n

Mr Letts said the hope was to bring the event back bigger and better next year for its third edition.<\/p>\n

“The overall response was really positive and hopefully we can continue what has some great benefit for the community and is fun.”<\/p>\n
