THE Surf Coast Shire’s ninth councillor has finally been found and sworn in, with Phoebe Crockett officially filling the vacancy in Torquay Ward on Tuesday this week.<\/p>\n

Cr Crockett won a countback conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) last week, as the first of the remaining Torquay Ward candidates from the 2024 local government election to achieve the required quota.<\/p>\n

She has begun in the role immediately and fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Rebecca Bourke in late September.<\/p>\n

Eric Menogue won the first countback for the seat on October 28 but declined to sign and return a written declaration to the VEC confirming his eligibility to serve, necessitating a second countback<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Cr Crockett was sworn in by shire chief executive officer Robyn Seymour in front of family, friends and fellow councillors during a ceremony in the Council Chambers.<\/p>\n

Shire mayor Mike Bodsworth welcomed Cr Crockett to the council group.<\/p>\n

“Congratulations to Phoebe on winning the VEC countback and with it, the honour of serving the people of Torquay Ward and the broader Surf Coast Shire,” he said.<\/p>\n

“We look forward to having Phoebe around the Council table to put forward ideas and contribute to our decision-making, as we work together to achieve the best outcomes for our community.”<\/p>\n

Cr Crockett said she was delighted and honoured to have the opportunity to serve.<\/p>\n

“The Surf Coast has given me so much and I’m ready to give back.<\/p>\n

“I look forward to working with my fellow councillors towards a thriving, connected and sustainable Surf Coast.”<\/p>\n

She has been elected for the remainder of the existing four-year council term, which will end in 2028.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
