ROAD safety improvements have begun along Torquay’s Fischer Street as crews work to install raised priority crossings and dedicated cycling lanes.<\/p>\n

As part of the works, Beach Road and the Darian Road roundabout will receive raised priority crossings.<\/p>\n

From Parkside Crescent to Highlander Street, an off-road bike lane will be constructed on the south-bound side, while a 1.5m on-road cycle lane will be marked on the north-bound side.<\/p>\n

Throughout the works, road closures will be in place, impacting southbound traffic between Aquilla Avenue and Cowrie Street. Traffic will be diverted via The Esplanade.<\/p>\n

Surf Coast Shire general manager of placemaking and environment, Chris Pike, thanked road users for their understanding during the works and said the long-term benefits would be significant.<\/p>\n

“We understand roadworks are inconvenient and appreciate the community’s patience while these upgrades take place.<\/p>\n

“It’s an important piece of work given the history of accidents along Fischer Street, including several involving cyclists.<\/p>\n

“While there is some short-term impact to people as they drive around town, the long-term safety beneits for all road users will be significant.”<\/p>\n

Fischer Street was identified as a high-risk corridor for pedestrians and cyclists in 2022 during the development of the counil’s Safer Cycling Strategy.<\/p>\n

Victorian government grants have funded the project, which was selected through a Transport Accident Commission-funded analysis in 2023, which included a community survey and workshop.<\/p>\n

The works are expected to be completed prior to Christmas.<\/p>\n

Additional works in Fischer Street to upgrade the section of road between Centreside Drive to Merijig Drive are scheduled for 2026.<\/p>\n
