{"id":175656,"date":"2025-12-10T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=175656"},"modified":"2025-12-03T16:35:52","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T05:35:52","slug":"lorne-mega-sporting-weekend-to-return","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/lorne-mega-sporting-weekend-to-return\/","title":{"rendered":"Lorne mega sporting weekend to return"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 7,000 people are anticipated to take to the starters line in the athletic Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf double event in Lorne next year.<\/p>\n<p>Taking place annually on the second weekend of January, the two events celebrate a longstanding tradition of camaraderie and raise funds for a good cause.<\/p>\n<p>Both events will support the ongoing lifesaving and beach safety efforts of the Lorne Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC).<\/p>\n<p>Last year saw a 19-year-old record fall, with Elwood runner Edwards Marks clocking 21:48 to better former Olympian Steve Moneghetti&#8217;s 2006 Mountain to Surf record.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s field, Sarah Klein led the pack to claim the top spot for a second straight year.<\/p>\n<p>The following day, the 45th Lorne Pier to Pub welcomed more than 4,900 swimmers, cementing its reputation as Australia&#8217;s largest open water swim.<\/p>\n<p>Olympic gold medallist and recent world record setter in the 800m short course freestyle, Lani Pallister, powered to her sixth consecutive win in the 1.2km course, while fellow Olympian Nick Sloman claimed victory in the men&#8217;s race.<\/p>\n<p>This year, competitors of all levels and ages are encouraged to come together to promote beach safety, wellness and connection through sport.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_175659\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-175659\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-175659\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Your-paragraph-text-_16027_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Your-paragraph-text-_16027_tn.jpg 756w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2025\/12\/Your-paragraph-text-_16027_tn-300x158.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-175659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Edward Marks broke a record in last year&#8217;s Mountain to Surf.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Race director and long-time competitor, Peter Williamson, said the events continue to represent the strength and connection of the Lorne and Surf Coast communities.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every year, we&#8217;re inspired by the energy and dedication of our volunteers, participants and supporters,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These events are a true reflection of what community spirit looks like: bringing people of all ages and abilities together to celebrate the coast we love.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The 2026 event marks Powercor&#8217;s seventh consecutive year as title partner.<\/p>\n<p>Powercor general manager Scott Russell said the company was proud to be standing alongside Lorne SLSC.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just as our teams keep the power flowing along the Great Ocean Road, the club&#8217;s volunteers keep the community safe on and off the beach,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>For more information or to register, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/lornesurfclub.com.au\">lornesurfclub.com.au<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 7,000 people are anticipated to take to the starters line in the athletic Pier to Pub and Mountain to Surf double event in Lorne next year.
