THE annual fire prevention roadside slashing program has started on the Surf Coast, with the slashing of Surf Coast Shire council reserves scheduled for the coming fire season.<\/p>\n
Local contractors have started works in the north of the shire and will work their way south over the next three to four weeks, depending on weather.<\/p>\n
Surf Coast Shire mayor Libby Stapleton said the program played a vital role in keeping the community safe.<\/p>\n
“We live in one of the most beautiful parts of Australia, but with that beauty comes one of the highest fire risks in Victoria.<\/p>\n
“The slashing program is one of the many ways we work to reduce fire hazards across the shire, and we are asking residents to do their part.”<\/p>\n
Shire officers have also been inspecting properties across the shire and issuing Fire Prevention Notices to help reduce bushfire risk on private land.<\/p>\n
Property owners are also asked to play their part in protecting the shire this summer.<\/p>\n
“We all need to make sure we are ready for the fire season,” Cr Stapleton said.<\/p>\n
