Image: SURF COAST SHIRE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A recent audit of the shire&#8217;s four-bin system, which compiled 12 years of kerbside data, shows 52 per cent of the material currently placed in red-lidded landfill bins could instead have been recycled.<\/p>\n<p>More than 35 per cent of this material is food waste that should be placed in FOGO bins, but is instead being sent to landfill, reducing its remaining capacity over time.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Adrian Schonfelder said the findings underline the urgency of improving sorting practices.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When food and green waste goes to landfill, it takes up valuable space in the Anglesea landfill, which is nearing capacity.
