{"id":175830,"date":"2025-12-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-07T13:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=175830"},"modified":"2025-12-03T20:05:23","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T09:05:23","slug":"shire-shares-tips-for-a-greener-christmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/shire-shares-tips-for-a-greener-christmas\/","title":{"rendered":"Shire shares tips for a greener Christmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WITH the festive season in full swing, the Surf Coast Shire is encouraging households to celebrate a little greener this Christmas by embracing simple, practical tips to cut down on waste and keep costs in check.<\/p>\n<p>To help locals reduce unnecessary waste, the council has released a list of 10 practical ideas covering everything from smart shopping and low-waste gifting to crafty decorations, leftovers and better recycling habits.<\/p>\n<p>Tips include choosing experiences or vouchers instead of physical presents, wrapping gifts in reusable fabric or recycled paper, planning meals carefully to avoid food being thrown out, and getting creative with handmade decorations made from repurposed materials and greenery from the garden.<\/p>\n<p>The shire is also encouraging residents to buy local this year to support the Surf Coast&#8217;s makers, growers and retailers while reducing transport emissions, and to ensure recycling and FOGO bins are used correctly.<\/p>\n<p>New addition to the council, Phoebe Crockett, said small choices can make a big difference.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Often it&#8217;s the simple things \u2013 nice food, good company and thoughtful choices \u2013 that make the season feel special,&#8221; she said. &#8220;More presents and more stuff doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean a better Christmas.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the cost-saving, low-waste tips offered households a chance to rethink habits and enjoy the season without the excess.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s all about buying local, avoiding excess, getting crafty, supporting creatives, choosing reusables, trying new options, and recycling where you can \u2013 all while having fun,&#8221; Cr Crockett said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You can start by avoiding items that often end up as waste, like single-use gift wrapping.
