An OPEN day at the Torquay Senior Citizens Centre has provided early momentum for its new Social Connect Day program, giving organisers insight into the types of activities residents are seeking ahead of its January 16 launch.<\/p>\n
The initiative will offer Surf Coast residents a fortnightly opportunity to connect with others while taking part in shared activities, which will be shaped by community interest and feedback.<\/p>\n
Visitors dropped into the centre throughout Saturday afternoon to learn more about the new program, chat with the program’s organisers and participate in activities such as mahjong.<\/p>\n
Secretary Barry Lierich said the centre’s new Social Connect Day initiative reflected its focus on building social connection and supporting wellbeing.<\/p>\n
“The whole concept was built on the fact that we really believe [in supporting] mental health and providing a service to the general community,” he said.<\/p>\n
“It doesn’t matter whether they’re seniors or not; [we want] all ages to be able to drop-in.”<\/p>\n
The centre offers a variety of events and programs to its members. These activities are open to people of all ages, and members are encouraged to bring their family and friends along.<\/p>\n
“They don’t have to be members on the day. They just need to come with a member,” Mr Lierich said. “It’s about connecting their friends and family, so they can meet the people who are important in their life.<\/p>\n
“Connection is vitally important for allowing people to be safe and get out of the house. [It’s] good for their mental health and good for getting them re-engaged with people and the things [they enjoy].”<\/p>\n
While the Social Connect Day will begin as a fortnightly program \u2013 running the first and third Friday of each month between noon and 3.30pm \u2013 organisers hope strong interest will allow it to become a weekly offering.<\/p>\n
