AS FAMILIES gear up for a summer of backyard swimming, the Surf Coast Shire is reminding residents that even small inflatable pools can trigger strict safety and registration requirements under Victorian law.<\/p>\n

Inflatable and temporary pools capable of holding more than 300mm of water, and set up for more than 72 hours, are subject to the same rules as permanent pools, including mandatory barriers and registration.<\/p>\n

“This is a potentially life-saving message,” deputy mayor Tony Phelps said.<\/p>\n

“It is so important that people are aware of the safety regulations and legislative obligations which come with the great responsibility of owning a residential pool or spa.<\/p>\n

Pools and spas need to be registered with the council and have safety barriers installed, he said.<\/p>\n

A building permit is also needed to construct of all pool and spa safety barriers.<\/p>\n

“The barriers need to be inspected every four years by a private inspector, and compliance certificates also lodged with council,” Cr Phelps said.<\/p>\n

“Concerns about the safety of residential pools and spas have escalated with their increased availability.<\/p>\n

“They can be bought and sold without any guidance on safety, Victorian government requirements for registration or about having compliant barriers.<\/p>\n

“These regulations are in place for a reason \u2013 to help keep kids and families safe.”<\/p>\n
