{"id":176933,"date":"2025-12-22T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-12-21T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=176933"},"modified":"2025-12-18T15:13:53","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T04:13:53","slug":"wetland-restoration-under-way-at-jan-juc-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/news\/wetland-restoration-under-way-at-jan-juc-creek\/","title":{"rendered":"Wetland restoration under way at Jan Juc Creek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Jan Juc Creek corridor has been restored to a more natural state, with a refreshed wetland now taking shape ahead of summer.<\/p>\n<p>The Jan Juc Creek daylighting project involved the removal of an old low-flow drainage pipe, returning surface water flows to the creek and allowing a natural wetland system to re-establish.<\/p>\n<p>Surf Coast Shire councillor Leon Walker said it was encouraging to see the wetland forming and the creek beginning to function as it should.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This project will help restore important local habitat, support biodiversity and enhance this special place for locals, while also improving stormwater quality for everyone,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Some algae has appeared in the newly formed wetland, which the shire says is a normal and harmless part of the establishment phase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seeing algae at this early stage is completely expected,&#8221; Cr Walker said. &#8220;It shows the wetland system is beginning to function, and as the plants grow and mature, they will naturally balance out the algae levels.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Constructed wetlands typically experience an early phase where filamentous algae becomes visible while wetland plants are still developing. Once established, the plants compete with algae for nutrients and sunlight, helping maintain a healthy ecological balance.<\/p>\n<p>Planning is also underway to replace the existing boardwalk with a new structure on the same alignment. The project is currently out to tender, with a construction timeline to be shared once a contractor is appointed.
