{"id":177780,"date":"2026-01-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-01-08T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/?p=177780"},"modified":"2026-01-08T12:39:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-08T01:39:27","slug":"to-bring-the-laughs-to-the-bellarine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/surfcoasttimes\/living\/to-bring-the-laughs-to-the-bellarine\/","title":{"rendered":"Barker to bring the laughs to the Bellarine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AMERICAN comedian Arj Barker will bring his stand-up show The Classics to the Bellarine for a one-night performance on Thursday, January 15.<\/p>\n<p>The 35-year comedy veteran&#8217;s show will take over the Barwon Heads Hotel.<\/p>\n<p>Now more than three decades into his career, Barker has built an international reputation through extensive touring and regular appearances at major comedy festivals, including in Adelaide and Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>He won the Perrier Best Newcomer Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival early in his career and has appeared on late-night talk shows in the United States, including Letterman and Conan O&#8217;Brian, as well as his own half hour special on HBO produced by Comedy Central.<\/p>\n<p>Audiences will also recognise him as recurring character Dave from HBO&#8217;s hit series Flight of the Conchords.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking ahead of the Barwon Heads show, Barker said coastal gigs had a particular appeal.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those sorts of coastal gigs are super nice because everyone is in a great mood, off work and flocking to holiday destinations. The vibe is always very good,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/ARJ-BARKER09-14-5168_33221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">American funnyman Arj Barker will bring his classic jokes to Barwon Heads next week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said The Classics allowed him to draw from a large back catalogue while still leaving room for newer material.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The show will be an open book for me to cherry pick my favourite material. I might have nine or 10 hours of material to go back through, and I blend that with newer stuff I&#8217;m working on,&#8221; Barker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Classics doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean its old or ancient \u2013 it could be an instant classic that I wrote yesterday.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Barker said he still found genuine enjoyment in performing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I truly just love it.
